I'm in LOVE

Ran: 3 miles in 24:08. Jogged another mile home in 9:00

I borrowed my friend Bianca's new Garmin forerunner 205 while she went to Yoga to the People this evening. I went out down the usual path along the East River in Manhattan.

I'm in LOVE with the Garmin, I really hope my parents get me the Garmin 305 that I asked for for my birthday in June!

It was great to be able to see my pace and the distance. It really pushed me to make it to the next mile and keep my pace down.

The Garmin also helped me realize that these days I naturally jog at about a 9 minute mile and my all out run is a little under a 7 minute mile. I run my 3 mile runs at about 7:50-8:00 minute miles.

I'm thrilled by all this, because I kind of just assumed I ran a 10 minute mile all the time! Maybe because on the treadmill at the gym I don't run very fast. I'm not sure!

My goal for the triathlon was to run the 4 mile run at an 8 minute mile, but I think I'm going to revise my goal to run it in under 30 minutes...so around a 7:30 minute mile.... that may change if my time continues to improve.

^^ I'm obviously thrilled about it pre-run :)

This Garmin may be my new favorite piece of "gear" for running/exercising.

What's your favorite piece of gear for exercise?

1/2 day at work

This morning at work I tried a new type of Luna bar. White chocolate macademia nut. I had half and saved half for another time. It was pretty tasty!

I got home, had some bread and bruschetta topping. I ate it so quickly that I didn't take a photo. haha.

Then I had a fruit strip. YUM

Lucky me, I got to leave work early today, at 1pm! You would think I'd make better use of my time, but all I did was go grocery shopping and then sent some work emails from home. Now I'm about to go for a run.

I told myself I was going to go to the gym and swim laps, but I really don't want to go get a swim cap first. haha.

sinful

When i got home from work today, i had a sinful snack. PB on a spoon with a few vegan chocolate chips. Yummyyyy

I wasn't able to go cycling after work today, because there was a thunderstorm. I'm heading to the gym tomorrow after work to practice swimming laps and then i'll run a few miles after.

I really need to improve my swimming speed and capabilities before the triathlon in August, luckily I still have 3 months!

Any tips for getting faster with freestyle swimming? Will consistent sessions in the pool naturally make me faster?

Running on empty today

Started my morning off with another banana chocolate chip muffin....actually, make that two muffins haha. I went back after and had another.

I was so exhausted all day today, because yesterday was a busy day. I worked from 9-6, went to a cocktail party from 7-10 and to dinner from 10-1130. Then me and some girl friends saw Sex and the City 2 at midnight! I really liked the film, but I didn't like that I only got about 4 hours of sleep because of it haha.

Since I've been doing a lot of training outside instead of in the gym, I've been getting a lot of color, and I burn easily, so I stocked up on some super high spf for when i bike and run outside. Trying to keep those wrinkles and moles away!

I was in such a rush this morning to get to work that I didn't have time to pack anything, so I went to Maoz Vegetarian and got a falafel sandwich in a wheat pita. No photo :(

I tried a little fresh salsa on it- it was delicious! Looking forward to the long weekend coming up!

So Proud!

This morning I started my day with my current addiction- banana chocolate chip muffins that I made this weekend! Not exactly the healthiest, but they're pretty small and paired with fruit it's a yummy breakfast. Today I had a banana on the side.

Here is the recipe in case you want to try them.

I had a doctor's appointment at 11:00 am and then I headed to my internship. At my desk, I had a Kashi TLC chocolate coconut bar and a granny smith apple.

I got home, had a snack and went for my run. I had a goal of running a 10 minute mile pace for 30 minutes, but I really pushed myself so by the end I was exhausted. When I used mapmyrun.com to figure out the distance, it turned out I ran 3.5 miles in 27 minutes! That's a really fast pace for me... around a 7:40 minute mile.

My goal for the triathlon 4 mile section is to run an 8 minute mile, so I feel like I'm already in pretty good shape, especially since I have 3 more months! Dream big!

When I got back from my run, I had a plate of veggies, but the peppers were a little rotten tasting.

I made some "fake mac and cheese" for dinner (one of my obsessions) with whole wheat elbow pasta, follow your heart vegan cheddar "cheese" and rice milk. It's one of my favorite dinners, so you'll be seeing it probably...too often haha.

Tomorrow I have a big day. First day at my second part-time internship! I can't wait to see how it goes!

First Triathlon

So I've been training for my first triathlon for the last two weeks! I'm doing a sprint distance triathlon in NYC on August 29th. It is 1/3 mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 4 mile run.

I guess I didn't realize how much a financial investment it would be. I've had to buy a lot of clothing and gear already. I went on a bit of a shopping spree at a sports store in Union Square this weekend. I got a bunch of stuff, including this pair of tri shorts for the race:

I also made this BIG purchase from Velo Nyc, and I'm so happy with it:

I'm used to riding around Nyc on a crappy old Raleigh Record. This new road bike is so much lighter and aerodynamic. I love it!

The problem with training in Nyc is finding a place where there aren't a ton of pedestrians. I've been cycling on the bike path on the West side, but runners and walkers take up a lot of the space, so it's hard to reach top speed and stay there. I'm thinking it would be better to get up at the crack of dawn when there are less people.

Today my friend Bianca, my roommate Lauren and I went for a run. I did about 4.5 miles in 40 minutes. Pretty good considering I haven't run that distance in a while.

I'm getting really excited for this race! It feels good to be working towards a goal again.

...& so it begins

After spending many hours glued to my laptop reading fitness and food blogs, I have finally decided to join the club and start my own blog. I would never consider myself to be a health nut... my roommates would tell you that I eat a lotttt of sweets.

I'm a student at New York University, in NYC. I'm entering my senior year in the Fall, and I have a lot of goals this summer relating to fitness. I used to be a competitive rower, so I really miss competing in races. My friend Bianca started running a lot of road races this year, so she definitely inspired me to get back into it. I can't wait to share my progress with everyone!

I've been a vegetarian since I was 17 (4 years), and I'm always trying to improve my eating habits and eat more cleanly. Hopefully this blog will help me improve upon my eating and let me visually track my habits!
